The village, the gorge, the peaks
and the hot springs were all named
for Major Rogers' nephew, Albert
Rogers, who accompanied his uncle on
many exploration trips including the
discovery of Rogers Pass.
Throughout the years of steam,
Albert Canyon was a "pusher"
station, with a small roundhouse
built in 1916 There was also a CPR
agent, operators and a section gang.
Upstairs in the station were living
quarters for the agent.
It was the railway employees who
dug, or perhaps blasted, a pit
at the hot springs. They then
lined it with heavy timbers.
That open air "hot tub" was used
by visitors and residents for
many, many years.
One of the early residents was a
Scandinavian miner named Ole
Sandberg, who is credited with
being the first to use skis in
the whole north Kootenay
country.
The pioneer proprietor of "The
Springs Hotel" was John
Skogstrom, and his nephew,
Charles Carlson, had the store.
Like all one-room country
schools, the one at Albert
Canyon served as a community
hall and also housed the
worshippers when a minister came
to hold a church service.
Nothing now remains of Albert
Canyon as it was. The
present-day Canyon Hot Springs
are some distance away, with the
water from the hot springs being
piped to it.
Plan on staying a few days
to take it all in...
